I thought this morning I'd doff my cap to Elizaphanian and his excellent blog with it's TBTM series. He posts religiously [pun intended] and is always worth a read.
As kids we always refered to this part of the beach as the 'monkey house' and of course now we say 'monkey beach', 'monkey steps' etc. I think it has something to do with the little lookout turret that was at the end of the wall there. I think it was used by coastguards or customs & excise at the time. I have always assumed this to be the original monkey house.
The artist's mother's intriguing biography of her early life on Mersea Island from the outbreak of World War 2 through to 1968. Available from The Artcafe!

You're too kind :-)
What a good thing Sam didn't think to register those acronyms as Elizaphanian trade marks!
Oh, and excuse terrible local ignorance, but why is that bit of the beach and the steps have the name 'monkey'??
